Peacock butterfly, the common brimstone, and the small turtleshell butterfly are some of the few butterflies which over winter in their adult stage. 

They are therefore also the first to be seen in spring. Butterflies, bees and bumblebees which wake early from their slumber need nutrients, and quickly, to see them through.

Planting spring bulbs in autumn is an easy way of making sure that our valuable friends have a source of food - it also has the added bonus of adding colour to a normally barren early spring landscape!
